Ikat shoulder cloth
Indonesia, East Sumba
42 x 97 cm.
Cotton
Sumbanese ikat is unique both for the anthropomorphic forms which dominate the design and the tie-dying process which uses three natural colourants (red, yellow and blue). Each thread is dyed individuallly. They are tied from memory using dried palm fronds, dyed and then woven.
This piece is a small cloth used as a shoulder cloth and has the distinctive style of East Sumba. It has considerable age being from the early 20th. century. Condition is excellent. No holes or faded colours. This is by all means a great piece of ethnic textile that will fit any textile collection.
